Is Your Skin Dry or Dehydrated?

Often dry and dehydrated skin can be mistaken for each other, however they are not the same.

Dry skin lacks oil and is a skin type (something you’re born with).  The four skin types are: dry, normal, oily and combination.

Dehydration is a skin condition resulting from lack of water.  You can have a skin type and still present with certain skin conditions.  For example a person with oily skin may still show signs of dehydration.

When you don’t drink enough water your body will withdraw water from your skin cells to protect your internal organs, leaving you with dehydrated skin. Drinking water helps rehydrate your body, however, it does not rehydrate your skin.

The best way to rehydrate your skin is via skin care products that contain aqua applied directly to your skin to plump it up, as well as quality ingredients such as essential oils that will penetrate the skin and leave your skin looking fresh and healthy.

Moisturising, toning and cleansing regularly, as well as keeping up your water intake all help to keep your skin hydrated.

Other ways to hydrate your skin:

  • Avoid prolonged contact with hot water.
  • Use a gentle cleanser.
  • Avoid using deodorant, soap and skin care products that contain alcohol, fragrance, retinoids or alpha hydroxy acid.
  • Moisturize immediately after taking a bath or shower or washing your hands.
  • Use a humidifier.
  • Wear gloves when going out in cold weather.
